American Detained in Cuba

Posted on December 12, 2009

An American, whose identity has not been released, has been arrested and detained in Cuba. The American works for Development Alternatives, Inc. (DAI) under a new USAID program whose goal is to promote democracy in Cuba.

From USA Today:

Jim Boomgard, DAI’s president and chief executive, said the person arrested is part of a new USAID program intended to “strengthen civil society in support of just and democratic governance in Cuba.”

According to the USA Today article, The New York Times reported that the person had been distributing communications equipment including laptops and cellphones.

Hmm, I wonder why the person was arrested?  Could it be that the communist Cuban government doesn’t want their citizens learning about ideas like democracy and freedom?
