A Mexican police officer was arrested today on charges of smuggling cocaine into the United States.  From the 92.3 KTAR website:

Ernesto Ibarra-Garcia, 33, an officer from San Luis, Mexico, was busted Tuesday at the San Luis port of entry, south of Yuma, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Phoenix said Friday.

Authorities said Customs and Border Protection officers were conducting a routine inspection of Ibarra-Garcia’s truck when they saw brown packaging protruding from a small opening in the truck frame. A narcotics-detecting canine alerted to the area.

Officers found 16 packages, weighing 17.6 kilograms, or about 35 pounds, in the truck frame. At least one of the packages was found to contain a white-powdery substance believed to be cocaine.

“These are serious charges facing this officer,” said U.S. Attorney Dennis K. Burke. “We are depending on men and women in uniform on both sides of the border to do the right thing, and most of them do just that. For the few that violate the public trust, we will investigate and prosecute them.”

Convictions for importing and possessing cocaine carry a maximum penalty of life in prison, a $4 million fine or both.
