A sampling of news stories and opinions related to illegal immigrants and illegal immigration:

  • Eight people were arrested after chaining themselves together in front of the Santa Ana (CA) federal building in protest of Arizona’s new anti-illegal immigration law, SB 1070.   The group called the new law a “racist anti-migrant law,” and called on Santa Ana to declare itself a sanctuary city.
  • Even in California, the approval rate for Arizona’s SB 1070 law is greater than its disapproval rate.  Surprise, surprise.
  • Joining the parade of
  • The Mexican consulate has changed its planned location for handing out ID cards to illegal immigrants on Catalina Island.  Instead of the Catalina Island Country Club, they will now be handing out IDs at Saint Catherine’s Church on the island.  The country club denied the consulate setting up shop after they discovered the ID handout event was not a “multi-cultural event.”
  • Sheriff Joe (Arpaio) strikes again.  The sheriff’s office served a search warrant at a Burlington Coat Factory on the tip that employees were using falsified documents as proof of eligibility for employment (ID theft).  Three illegal immigrants were arrested and the sheriff’s office is looking for seven more.
  • Joining the parade of celebrities that probably have never read Arizona’s SB 1070 anti-illegal immigration law, but still want to protest it, Los Lobos has cancelled their upcoming June 10 gig in Arizona.
  • The showdown in the White House between President Obama and Arizona’s Governor Jan Brewer ended in a draw today, or maybe described as a “stall.” Brewer reiterated her concerns and requests and all the President could do was to promise his staff would visit Arizona in two weeks to discuss the issues with the Governor’s staff.
  • There are two rallies related to SB 1070 planned in the “Valley of the Sun”  for the next two weekends, but these actually are to show support for the new law!  What a nice change of pace.
  • A group of San Diego locals are urging a boycott of their own city because of the city’s boycott of Arizona over its new anti-illegal immigration law.  Let’s see how the San Diego City Council feels about being on the receiving end of a boycott, it could prove interesting.
