Levi Johnston first came to national attention when Sarah Palin took the stage with John McCain in the 2008 Presidential campaign.  He was brought into the spotlight on the revelation that he was the “baby daddy” of Bristol Palin’s unborn child.  Not too much was made of him at the time except for the media’s question of whether he was being forced into a “shotgun wedding” because of the campaign. Well, the campaign came and went, ending in the McCain/Palin ticket defeat.  Bristol and Levi’s baby was born in December 2008 and all was well.

Then came the break up.  Immediately after, there didn’t seem to be any trouble brewing, and Johnston seemed okay with the situation.  A few weeks later, Levi went public, things changed,  and started to heat up

Once Levi started “speaking out,” oh, how the media loved him.  Within a few weeks he had an interview  on the CBS Early Show and an interview with Larry King just to dish the “dirt” on the Palins.  He had interviews with Vanity Fair and with Entertainment Tonight riding the wave of celebrity due to his connection with the Palins. He said all sorts of salacious things including claiming Sarah Palin called her son Trig, who has Down’s Syndrome,  “retarded,” and said she joked about it.  He said he thought the Palins would divorce because of the arguments he “overheard.”  He seemed to gleefully suck up the spotlight while talking down the Palins and the media played it for all it was worth.

Because of his connections to the Palin family he was paid to pose for Playgirl  magazine.  And, he even got a television commercial which played off the situation between himself and Bristol Palin.   All the while, the media gave Johnston a pass because he slammed the Palins and claimed he was “going to leak some stuff on her.”  In short, Johnston spent about a year acting reprehensibly.

But, today, with rumors swirling about Bristol and Levi being back together,  Levi has come out with an apology to the Palin family.  Blaming his tawdry behavior on hurt feelings from his break up with Bristol, Levi has admitted that he said things about the Palins that “were not completely true.”   Really?  Not completely true?  You mean he was lying when he said Sarah Palin called her son, “retarded?”  Saying he’s privately apologized to the Palins, and now wants to apologize publicly, Johnston is apparently coming clean with us about his claim on having “stuff” on Sarah Palin.

While his apology may begin to smooth things over with Bristol (she issued her own statement), I believe the man has a long way to go to make up for an entire year of spreading lies and malicious gossip.  How about he go back on each and every media outlet where he spouted untruths and set the record straight?  In effect, retracing his steps and taking back every misstatement he allow published or aired in his name?  That might be a good way to show real repentance.  What do you think?  Would the same media show as much interest in knowing the truth about the Palins instead of some wild accusations which pander to the fringe?  Hmm, I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but I’m not holding my breath.
