Losing the Independents, Obama Sinks to a New Low

July 2009-July 2010 Trend: Barack Obama Presidential Job Approval Rating, by Party, Weekly Aggregates

Hot off the presses today, Gallup is reporting that President Obama has sunk to a new low with independents, the group who in large part were the reason for his win in 2008:

Thirty-eight percent of independents approve of the job Barack Obama is doing as president, the first time independent approval of Obama has dropped below 40% in a Gallup Daily tracking weekly aggregate. Meanwhile, Obama maintains the support of 81% of Democrats, and his job approval among Republicans remains low, at 12%.

The data is from the week of June 8 – July 4th.  This is before the announcement came out about the Justice Department bringing suit against Arizona and its new anti-illegal immigration law which has a high approval rating nationwide.  It’s looking like it will be a race to the bottom on approval numbers for all but the Democrats who continue to hang with the President no matter what he does.  Does this mean he is leaving his own party out to dry for the midterms?
