Sneaking across the border in Arizona doesn’t just mean going south to north

While we often hear of illegal immigrants sneaking in to our country by crossing our southern border with Mexico, there are also some people who are trying to sneak out of the country the same way.

From KTAR:

PHOENIX — Sex offenders are flocking to Arizona with hopes of quietly slipping out of the United States, according to an investigation by ABC-15.

Arizona is one of five states that are attractive to convicted sex offenders, authorities said. The others are California, Michigan, New Mexico and Washington. Out-of-state sex offenders are required to register within three working days of arriving in Arizona.

U.S. marshals, along with local police and sheriffs, are conducting sweeps looking for the 100,000 sex offenders across the nation who are ignoring laws that require them to register. In Arizona, the marshal’s office found 243 fugitive sex offenders between July 2006 and May 2010, 27 of those in the first half of this year.

Nationwide, nearly 12,000 missing sex offenders were arrested between July 2006 and May of this year.
The good news is that the U.S. Marshall’s office will be tripling its number of full-time agents in order to better track these offenders down and get them off the streets.  This is one government program I don’t mind expanding.
